Tailgate glass removal

by cal16v » Tue Jan 20, 2015 1:18 am

Does anybody know a sure proof means of removing the glass intact from the tailgate? The so called glass "specialist?" managed to remove mine in pieces but I have another in a donor car. I'd just like one less issue...

thanks

I'd be interested if you find a way,as I'm certain they break nearly all the time

Thanks for the replies...
I have a good painter but his suggestions for correctly removing bonded glass leave me

Can anyone confirm the method?
@v6steve, you mentioned a good deal of patience is required so can I assume this is the traditional heat/cut/heat approach?
(Congratulations also on achieving that milestone  )

I'm considering not removing the glass from the one from donor car and just using that tailgate as is. The window surround was in perfect condition on my tailgate so I'm beginning to contemplate (read panic) the implications if this one breaks.

cheers

Feed a metre of cheese wire through a hollow needle, use the needle to pass through the bonded section, then use the cheese wire in a sawing motion to cut the bond.

Chavtastic thanks for your reply but I suspect the many 100's of cycles of high temps over the years have hardened the bonding material to the extent that it now resembles plastic. Unless I can find something that will soften it significantly or better dissolve it?

It's just like cutting through dried silicone

I've done it twice this last month or so in lightening my bootlid
