Snowflake

by Tkeenan2107 » Sun Dec 28, 2014 10:38 pm

Ok as some of you may have noticed I recently got hold of what I believed to be a good conditioned DTM, well everything's not always as it seems. I thought I may be better off starting a members project rather than list the different problems I'm having, as my goal is to have this car iv now come to name Snowflake, ready in a good show standard for Billing. That's the goal but already I'm becoming very disheartened.

Here she is in all her glory.

Ok so when I first got her I drove her to the nearest fuel station while I put a little more air in the tyres I left her running, climbed back in the car noticed the temp gauge up to 95'c, but once driving it went down, the next day I took it round to our Tosh and a friend and we thought the the radiator had gone and that if we replaced this then that would solve it? Mmmm not quite. Yes the radiator I had on was falling to bits so it was a good call, but still the car is over heating, topped the coolant up and all that and the warning light is on, also the oil level light but I believe this to be too much oil as we have now come to the conclusion the dip stick I had in had snapped, so I was getting the right reading when pulling it out (doh), so so far the things iv found to be wrong are

Oil level warning light,
Radiator warning light,
Fan only kicks in for about 10seconds at 95'c,
No reverse lights (done a clip test and the switch needs replacing),

These are my main concern at the minute as its my daily I'm not fortunate enough to have it as a weekend or summer car so really is getting on my nerves! But the temp problem is still there no change, all rad hoses are pressurised too...

Will upload pics and videos shortly

Over heating?

Then on top of this

The clutch is about the top inch that's all, so suspected clutch needed,
The gear box is struggling to go into first and reverse,
A lot of play in the gears,
Oil sensor not working, or should I say it goes all the way over but not giving a reading,
Sun roof doesn't work,
Leather seats but not heated as they have gone to the trouble to even put the heated buttons in but not wire it up?
Head lining sagging,
No interior light,
No handbrake at all, even when put into first it continues to roll,
Major juddering from from brakes,
Fronts shocks are knackered,
Oil leak but can't see where from,
Washer jets pump leaking,
Passenger door won't open by key and central locking works when it wants,
Seems to be a leak around the air intake, again can't see what.

Hi the temp went up to 100 and that's when I turned the engine off, didn't want to risk it, and I'd say about 25minutes to get o 100'c,

do you know how I can tell which gear box it is by the seriel numbers or anything?

Yes shorted out the 2 pins and the reverse lights came on, so its the switch. Thanks again for that idea.

If you clean the top of the gearbox behind the selector you
will see it says F18 on the cast.

Thanks guys, iv never known a temp to go over 95'c unless it's had heating issues, it was creeping just over 100 when I turned the engine off, and the radiator hoses were solid, which I know from past experience shouldn't be like this either, so I'm starting to wonder what could cause the blockage? Changed radiator for one we know worked, now I'm starting to think that the sensor isn't working? Or the thermostat isn't opening correctly?

Could be your head gasket, as mine was loosing water and temp going sky high when driving, but it had gone from the cylinder to water bores on the head, which was passing compressed gasses into the coolant system making the hoses solid, and it also knackered my radiator with the pressure in the water system, and when it was stood and I wasn't driving it the compression in the coolant system was forcing coolant into the cylinder bore! so no typical head gaskets gone signs of water mixing with the oil and getting creamy residue on the oil filler cap.

you can just make out from the picture of my old radiator below where the water channel has been inflated with the pressure.

As soon as tosh pulled it out the wind blew most of the vents off thats how bad it was, but yet im still having the same problem, just been sat in traffic and it hit 100 tyen traffic started moving got the wind flowing into the engine again and cooled down right down infact, struggling to make my mind up on what to do

Thanks I'm trying to be optimistic here haha,

On a serious note I think it is the head, but trying to eliminate other things first if I can so tomorrow I'll be jacking it up and having a good look, do you think it would do any harm for me to spray a can of degreaser on the lower half of the engine then jet wash it??? Just so I can have a better look and also see where this leak is coming from.

If you did jetwash it you might want to wait till the weather gets a bit warmer, you don't want any water getting into anything, then freezing over night and knackering something else up.

Not sure there's a leak its recently had a new sump put on it as it looks new, so not sure if it's sat on right, at least if I clean it up enough I may see where from.
