My calibra 8v project norway. (warning.alot of pic)

by DjWhitelion » Mon Feb 09, 2015 10:26 am

Hi all.

First off i want to say sorry if my English is not that good.

Second of i want to say hi to all from Norway. The calibra community web page in Norway is not as good as it once was.
So have been looking for a site where i can get tips, and basically feedback on my project.
I have had my project car for 8 years + now.
Its a slow project. Maybe not the most exiting one. But its exiting for me when im now finally nearing the end.

i will post sporadic pictures that i have taken over the years. But i can post links to my project site on the Norwegian site, so those who wants to see the whole proses
can.

buy day:

My project started out to be a sound project. i did buy the car specifically to build a stereo system in it.

Then..

I had it on what we call "Eu" control here...
As i said. i did buy this car as a stereo project. and that’s what the first images show.
I did buy the car from a family member of mine that just told me that all i had to do to get the car approved was to was to get all interior in place. take it to the control and the car will be approved.
Well. these next images show how much you can trust that family guy.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

So basically. they found loads of dangerous rust on the car...
I have to say if i did know what i do today. I would not continue on the car that time.
But. There was a devil inside me that said, damned i want to save this car...
So i started trying to fix the car. only welding experience i had was from school and i did know basically nothing about cars.

So started taking the car apart again.

Image

Image

Image

Image

This was my pore try in trying to fix it the first time.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Ended buying a parts ca also.

Image

Image

Image

Then i ended up not being able to work on the car where i had it (second move)
Finally found a garage where i could work under roof. Started to take the car more apart. And then i ofc found even more rust.
The motivation was weary dwindling right now.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Then it was to destroy the work we did on the stereo. And i will never build it that way again. hehe.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Off with the fix i did that summer

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

im happy with that result.

But then the garage i was in got broken in to.
Nothing got stolen because they must have been running away because of the alarm. But they broke the door So nothing was safe anymore.
So time to move the third time. And that did not help my motivation at all.

Image

Image

Image

Not as much working space as before

Image

Image

Around here i was so sad about the progress, all rust that i did know i had no idea on how to fix. And the constant use of money for a garage i could not really work good in.
I went out to try to sell the car. Under that proses i came in contact with a guy and he came to see the car.
We did miss understand one another on the phone. Apparently he did think it was another car type.
but listened on my story on the car.
Some days later he called me and said he could take care of all the rust of the car for me. ofc for a price. but no way near how much it would take for a garage to fix it.
After a long time thinking. talked it over with my GF of that time. And we decided to say yes.
So the next pictures right now are not me working on the car yet.
When i came to this stage. I started on the car in early 2008. This stage started early 2011.

Then it was mine again.
Because it became more work then he himself did expect for the price we agreed on. i decided that all the rust inside the car. i could take care of. And my job was to put the car together again.

But i don’t have garage. So thing i do are sporadic. And can be weeks in between. So not that much work is done on a long time really.

Milestone...

The car was working and still puuring..

http://youtu.be/dRN6qVcuuho

First time in 5 years that the car engine was running.

Then....

New year’s came.

And the car got stolen.
Some hours later the police found it this way:

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

This did not really motivate me much. and one month later my then wife said she wanted a divorce and there was loads of drama in my family (when you get it good. you get it real good).

But basically they found out that the rear had become loos. and the stearing was real bad (here is where my english comes short. i can’t explain much better than that :P )

After some months i found a new GF. And i came across a new calibra. That was cind of better than mine. And i could get it cheap.
And because my motivation was low with my own. i decided to sell the car.

And again. in that proses. i came in contact with someone that had followed my tread in the Norwegian site. And he gave me a reaaal cheap price to fix the rest. so it became cheaper for me to fix the car then to sell it and buy the other one. Because the other one did have little bit work left on it to.

And he fixed it.

http://youtu.be/Vss479cH2j0

Now it became my job to do the small things.

Image

Image

Image

And that is how it looks like today.

i had a day where i was driving it all day on Saturday.
And it was awesome. my first time i could drive it without my heart pounding like a wild man.

Whats next?

new EU control on Tuesday.
Wash it so the pollen on the orange is away.
protective cote on the area where there have been welding.

need to save for a new paint job on the car.
then its stereo time again.

like i said. if i did know then what i know now. i would probably do that to.
But as of now. there is toooooo much time and money in it to scrap it. i will never get the money back in times of value in the car.
So im getting my money worth in having the car just as i want it.

update..

i got the car to where the EU control is being done.
But driving it there it did not run as it shuld. I think that becouse of the history of trying to start it.
Draining the battery. then waiting a long time before charging it again. The battery is not good anymore.
i charged it before my test drive on saterday. But forgot to do it before today. It's when i have something electric on
it starts to "cough" and have an uneven "puuring" (man i feel my English is so short trying to explain stuff. hehe)

Then the EU control was over.

I got some minor issues that i need to take care of before i get the approval.
I have never. EVER been so close to an approval of this car.

What needs to be fixed..

ABS light is on. So need to find out why.
The hand break is not as strong as it shuld be. and on the left side there is no hold at all. So need to get that in check.
And one of the mountings for one of the front headlights are broken. So the headlight is loos. I have some after market with angel eyes.
I asked if that was okey to put on. And he said yes. So going to do that the next days..

So close!.

ABS could be either a sensor or one of the rings is either rusted up bad enough that its throwing the signal or the ring could even be cracked again this would throw up the fault.
can you get somebody to put it on a diagnostic machine to read the fault code that way you'll know what one is at fault instead of chasing around all four

thanks.

im betting its becouse of the right side back.
Becouse whe had to replace that whole thing becouse when the car got stolen and the rescue car was draging it out of the ditch
he broke something.
Image

This is what he broke while getting it up. So we have changed it. The ABS light was never on before the car got stolen.

Just to compare the controles...
This is almost exactly one year ago.
