Need a new rack, but which one?

by MadOnVaux! » Wed Nov 12, 2008 6:11 pm

Guys, (and Gals ;))

Ive just been told my steering rack is on its way out (It had a slight leak advised at last MOT, and its got slightly worse)....garage says its OK to drive aslong as i keep an eye on the fluid, but it will fail next years MOT when the time comes in April, so deciding to get it done now.

I plan buying an exchange rack from www.buypartsby.co.uk , but they have 4 listed, (although the last one is a quick rack which im not bothering with),

so i have 3:

ZF Type Splined Pinion

Saginaw Type Plain Pinion

ZF Type Plain Pinion

Even my garage didnt really know, as they said they couldnt find a ZF badge on mine and wouldn't be able to tell really until the rack is off.

So, i crave your knowledge to help me, any idea which one of the above 3 i will need please?, car is a 1995 16v XEV model.

Thanks in advance :)

Defintely stay away from the ZF type as ther have an alluminum rack, this wears quicker than the non ZF type.

Robbie - That would be an idea i suppose, ta.

Taz - Cheers for the offer, the 2nd off of a rack ive had actully, but given the size of job it is to remove and fit another, id rather go down the new/recon route, thanks though.

Naz - Hmm, so the Saginaw one could be possible then?

Give these guys a buzz, I have used them a few times and very knowledgeable. Saginaw is apparently the better rack which is what I have but not sure that would mean it fits your model.

Righty, after some further investigation from myself and my garage and from what i've seen on a website, it appears i have the ZF rack with the plain pinion....can anyone confirm this is the type that would be fitted to my year of Calibra please?

This may or maynot help but the zf rack has a different connection for the columb than the other type!
If you have a zf fitted you will need to replace with the same type ..

Had mine replaced last year and found this out when i did the job.
Got a recon unit in exchange for mine at a local steering center for £150

I fitted it myself at home.
Theres a very hard to reach bolt underneath the brake servo that gave me some agro, but otherwise i did the job ok at home.

Does anyone know if i'll feel a difference in the steering or not with this rack fitted?...Its not as if mine feels slack or owt as it is.
