V6 Brakes 'grinding & juddering'

by Russep00 » Sun Oct 10, 2010 7:38 pm

'97 V6 with standard brake & suspension set-up.

I'm getting an intermittant grating/grinding/juddering under gentle braking. Feels a little like the ABS when it kicks back through the pedal, but no ABS light and its not exactly the same. Braking efficiency is lost until you lift off and try again or push much harder!

It had new front discs & pads 2 months ago before it sailed throught he MOT (fitted myself so I know they're right!) and since this started I have stripped all four wheels down, cleaned and re-assembled then this weekend I stripped & cleaned the fronts again and fitted more new genuine GM pads but still no joy. All the sliders and pistons move freely. Rear brakes and pads are just over 12 months old.

I am going to replace the caliper springs in case they are not holding as tight as they should, but can't think of anything else it could be - any ideas???

Is this something you can hear or is it just the feeling through the pedal etc?

Both. You can hear a noise - it sounds just like something is stuck in the caliper - and its very noticeable on the pedal. But it's intermittant and only under gentle/steady braking....

It did note a small break in an ABS ring, although it doesn't feel like ABS and there's no light.

And I checked that the dust shield is well clear of the disc

1st thing i'd do is inspect the ring closely and give it a clean up. Also check the gap between the sensor and the ring, you are looking for a gap of no more than 1.5mm
After that (if all ok) remove the caliper and pads, check/clean up all faces, and rebuild.
Could be a small stone lurking in there somewhere

Thanks - already cleaned & re-built the fronts 3 times including the recent disc change! Believe me I've gone over this with a fine tooth comb....

I always clean the ring when I service the brakes and this is the first time I noticed the break. I will change both sides but my gut feeling is that isn't the problem...

Is the ring still a tight fit?
The crack could poss' upset the signal

Taken from autodata 3.18
1, Check wheel bearings for excessive play.
2, Check wheel speed sensors for mechanical security.
3, Inspect toothed wheel speed sensor rings visually for damaged teeth and cleanliness.

Definately not wheel bearings and everything's secure.

OK - will change the rings. Are they the standard 29 tooth types?

its easier just changing the cv joints as you get abs rings attached. i've just done mine and their only 20-25 quid each

Not yet, but will do. The TC plays up a little too so another reason for suspecting the fronts.

Is it easier to change the ring alone or the whole CV joint?

Stealers are quoting me £42 + VAT a side (trade) for an exchange unit. Anyone got any good experiences with alternative suppliers??

Isn't this just the ABS self test? is it in the first few yards of pulling off?

Its a strange one...there aren't many things it could be but without driving it its hard to speculate at all. I had a V6 Cav and the ABS would sometimes come on a bit early. The LET rarely comes on. FYI TC is pretty renowned for faults on both cars.

If you are totally happy with the braking from your own inspection then get a brake specialist to check it out ~ usually that is free of charge anyhow.

I would say, my LET would tear these up quick. Any CV joint at that price has to be recon or crappy internals. Steer clear. (pardon the pun)
