where's the other one

by cabbyman » Wed Jul 19, 2017 11:04 am

Hi, I've just looked at the web site "how many left" and found out there is only 2 taxed and 10 sorned of my 16v (red top non turbo) 4X4 model Calibra and that made me wonder where is, and, who owns the other one taxed.

If you check on the web at "how many left" in Q1 there was turbo 4x4 showing 56 taxed and 230 on sorn with 2.0 litre 16v 4x4 (non turbo) there was only 1 taxed and 11 on sorn. I taxed mine in April this year which if the other is still taxed makes 2 and 10 but whichever way you look at it there is only 12 non turbo and 286 turbo versions registered.
So where is the other taxed ?????

Yes, bought it from a garage in Fenton Stoke three years ago. I have often wondered where is the other one and what its like. Mine is in better condition now than when it was bought. It has only done 47,000 and I,m the 5th owner. Ive had the rear arches done and the sill steps. Fitted custom made stainless steel exhaust with decat. Four new tyres to make sure the 4x4 system runs equal. Everything works ok including the sunroof. Put a switch on the 4x4 fuse to run in front wheel drive only and got better mileage per gallon.

Hi slipperdaz it did'nt mention the exhaust was falling off and the steering was partially seized either......Did you say sell her, you can't do that ......
It is as rare as the proverbial and should command a good price if you do sell. I had a chap come to me last year at Shugborough Hall show and he had been to look at the LE Turbo in an underground car park in Kent selling on Ebay, that had not moved for ten years and said it was rubbish and they wanted over Nine grand for that. He then asked if I would sell mine because he had never seen a production non turbo 4x4 before ( he would'nt have they are rarer than rare). Driving from the show I thought bl***y hell how much would he have given me. Sorry, I have not done any club meets or the VBO. Only done fairly local shows with the Calibra for a couple of years, since I found out how rare I stopped using it. I had a 1986 MK3 escort cabriolet before (now sold) that I used for shows. Anyway is there any further car shows south of Chesterfield you will be going to this year ? our next one is Beaumanor Hall this Sunday then Lupin Farm just off the A38 at Alrewas Sunday August 30th. If you have anything between those dates and south of Chesterfield I might consider a run up and see you.

not sure on car shows..... I think richie mentioned Thiresby hall in august. we were supposed to go to shugborough last year but had to pull out the day before. I know they are rare..... now. I knew they were quite special when i bought it. but not as rare as they are being talked about now. I dont mind moving her on....... would of prefered a cav personally but everyone I looked at back then was dying a rusty death...... I will look for a nice 8v model to replace her with.... I want to be able to drive her mote but like you say..... when there are possibly fewer than 12 left..... it needs more looking after.... Are you at south Chesterfield yourself then? I thought I recognised that lorry in the background of you picture

We are in Burton on Trent which is just off the A38 south from Derby. Our next big show is Lupin Farm 20th August (donation entry) its just off the A38 at Orgreave Alrewas on the A513. There was about a thousand vehicles last year filling two fields on the farm. Leave A38 at the island for National Arboretum. I have treated myself to a cheap run around for every day use in order to keep my Calibra safe as possible. I look at it as an investment since the value will only increase in the future. Perhaps we will meet up at a show next year as this years shows are coming to an end. It would be something special to have the only two taxed non turbo 4x4 calibra together !

I will check with the wife and see what we are doing on that day. we may be dropping in to beaumanor hall on sunday. Richie has just put a call out on the fb page. It seems such a shame to just park them up in a garage doesnt it. mind you, if it is true there are only 12 left in the uk then not much longer and they may just be worth something decent. How do you get on running it in fwd only? Is it just a case of rotating the tyres more often than the 1000 miles ish people have talked about? I think I have managed to do the grand sum of 500 miles since i bought mine..... nearly 6 years now :) (it could be nearly 600 but I cant be sure) only done billing once, thoresby twice, market harborough and a few local trips for mots and shopping. Anyway, its good to see another one. Richie told me theres 1 on ebay at the mo aswell. looks a bit too much like hard work but no doubt someone will snap it up. Its at 1200 already iirc

I still change the tyres front to back every thousand or so to keep things balanced and run four wheel drive now and again to keep the system well lubed.
We are booked in at Beaumanor this sunday, so all being well then we shall see you there. Would you ask richie for the item number for the one on ebay as I can only see turbo versions.
I have manged 600 miles between MOT's this last year.
Hope to see you sunday

hi slipperdaz, checked out that calibra and yes it needs a load of work and dosh spending on it, reading between the lines its had bits swapped or removed so it is not anywhere near standard. I would think the best bit is the locked transfer box because you would have no worries about running radius of tyres. There is a group of various makes of car in our convoy sunday as we are hoping to be together at the show. I am booked in class H along with couple of friends. The weather forecast is ok for sunday so looking forward to seeing you there.

Sounds like it should be a good day. I think Darrell is coming from here too, Richie says he might not be able to make it. That blue one does look a bit far gone, certainly a lot worse than mine when I bought it. So now we know of 1 converted, 1the blue one and our 2. That's 4 from a possible 12. Odds are stacking up in our favours .......
