alternator charging

by stevo turbo » Fri Jun 04, 2010 8:39 pm

rite so i bought the car and was told the alternator was knackered at time (all is ok) so the lad gives me a working item with the car, so a week ago i fitted it and no problem jumped started it and it started charging (now all is well) it charged til the point it started smoking so knocked it off as soon as i noticed and left to cool down. changed the battery and charged it over night. started it today for going for mot and kept an eye on it. its charging fine at 14.5v there abouts but its starting to boil the battery (know to be good) so i cannot understand why its over charging all the time. best to fit a third alternator? im just always weary of it catching fire now and will another one fix this charging problem?

14.5v at tickover may rise to over 15v at 3k rpm.hence my question.

15v is bad for your battery.
