Air Con Advice Please

Any electrical issues

Hi All,

I took my V6 into a local air con specialist this morning to have it re-gassed. When I went to collect it they told me that there was a big leak at the condensor and that I'm going to need a new one, along with a new drier... they've quoted me £450 inc labour and VAT (that's for GM parts, OEM parts was £430). The compressor was apparently replaced shortly before I bought the car (not a new part though), but they were unable to test this today as the gas wasn't even getting that far. I've got it booked in again on Friday for 30 minutes just for them to take a closer look at the compressor to see if it's functioning. The last thing I want is to spend all that replacing the condensor and drier only to find the compressor needs doing as well

I'm a tad confused though as the system does give signs of doing something... when the button is pressed on the dash the revs rise for a few seconds, then come back down again, and the same happens when turning it off. No light comes on in in the switch though. With the fan off air also starts blowing when it's turned on (not cold).

Any ideas at all? I've phoned AutoVaux for a price on the parts but am waiting for them to get back to me.

Any advice much appreciated

Thanks,

Neil

If your revs are rising and falling when switching a/c on and off then your compressor is at least cutting in and out, although it doesn't mean that this won't leak either. If your system is out of gas then you shouldn't have the a/c light on anyway.

You should be able to get the spares cheaper through Autovaux, and you may be able to fit them yourself, but unfortunately when a/c systems need work it normally involves a fair cost.

Some people just have them regassed, but if it's lost it's gas in the first place then it will lose the next lot as well in time.

Thanks for the reply. I asked them how long the gas would last in there and they said they're not allowed to leave it in them if they know that they're leaking, so they extracted it all out again. At any rate he said it was leaking straight back out again anyway so would have only lasted a couple of days.
