Steering Probs - Help/Comments Please

by Fox » Fri Apr 22, 2005 10:14 am

I've just bought a second hand Calibra Coupe (1998 - 47K on the clock) from a dealer. (3 months warranty + 12 months MOT)
As usual, looked at it through rose coloured shades.
The steering was pulling to the left, so I had my local garage to give the car a once over. They came up with the following :-
O/S track rod bolt broken, O/S anti-roll bar linkeage broken, O/S front wishbone rear bush splitting, tracking needs doing !
There's a month left on the 'warranty' so I'll try and get the repairs done on that.
Are these usual problems for the mileage or should alarm bells ring.
Thanks.

To be honest none of these three problems are big or expensive jobs and their common faults on a calibra, but you should be asking who did the mot as all three are failures. I suggest you get the tracking checked after they do the work because they probably won't and you don't wanna destroy a set of tyres.

All this in 47k?

mine got to 90k before the wishbones needed to be replaced. Sounds like it's had a short yet rough life. There's a buyer's guide on the home page of this site. VERY usefull even if you have already bought.

I'd get a very fine toothcomb out while it's still under warranty.

mine has started the same problems, but i expect it as the car had done 154k,and only 39k on new engine,
i would see the garage and get them to sort it befor the warranty runs out

TBH they all want replacing in pairs... as the parts are very cheap anyway.

£6.50 for a complete trackrod end
£15.00 for a wishbone etc...
£8.00 for a drop link

None are difficult jobs, so I'd get what you can done under warranty then do the rest yourself.

Hmmm...All on the off-side. Maybe hit a kerb hard or something?

They are common problems, but to all go at once...Hmmm...Not so sure.
