Track rod ends

by chas27 » Sat Jul 30, 2005 2:59 pm

After putting new 17" wheels on decided the tracking was out but when i took to tyre shop they tell me the trackrod ends are completely seized.
What a bummer its one thing after another with Calibra's.
Anyway does anyone know if its a big job or what?
Could it be done or does it need to go to proper garage?

when i went for tracking they said that mine were siezed, without touching them, they needed replacing!
The next day i soaked them in wd40 a few fimes, left it till the next day and cleaned them up with a cloth, then went somewere else and because they looked recently fitted they just did the tracking woth no problems

yes i did think i might get away with giving em a good soak in wd40, they ll probably loosen if left overnight.

the main problem is the actual 13mm locking bolts on the track rod ends will snap off. I tried to loosen mine of and one broke. I just replace both sides

easier if you remove both the arms from the actual rack and then have them in a vice, It took me about two hours from start to finish to do both sides

two 15mm bolts right in he middle of the rack you need to take the locking tabs off though first

If you take it to a garage then they can nseize them normally. You can heat them up gently and use WD-40 at the same time to unseize them. Its do able but some people can't be arsed and people like Kwikfit won't allow their 16yr old mechanics to tuch the ecetyn torch.

Cheers

It is much easy to take the whole steering arms off though and do it on the bench, this prevents you from bending the arm then copper grease it all up, and you dont get the problem again really

or you put them in a workmate and use one of them things from B&Q gas butane type burners ....just enough heat to slacken them off but it dont get as hot is your using Oxy/Ethylene

how much are replacement arms?? are they supposed to have a slight bend in them, or be dead straight

This is a common fault on Cavaliers aswell. Been through loads of them.

Can be b@st@rds to get at. But shouldn't be a expensive job.
