Knock, knock,knocking top of suspension

by kdchorse2 » Sun Sep 28, 2008 8:01 pm

Having read the posts on suspension knocking I located mine as coming from top of passenger side suspension... either mounting or shock absorber.. but drivers side does not knock and its top nuts must be tightened to at leat 80 ft lbs...(my 15/16 fits nicely).. knocking passenger side is set to specified 41ft lbs ... any risks if I tighten the passenger side nuts to 80 ft lbs before I start thinking about replacement parts.
Also does anyone have an exploded digram of the top suspension mounting they can post...Haynes is less than ideal..
Hopefully thanks in advance..

the first nut is tightened to 55nm and the second nut is tightened to 200nm
take off the top nut and ring and tighten the first nut to the required torque and then replace the ring and second nut tighten to required torque..
if you believe the strut to still knock then suspect the strut bearing to be worn and replace..

You could try the large ring nut that holds the cartridge into the holder. mine used to knock until i tightened it. Its a 55mm so i used a wrench on mine. Try it, it may save you torquing a nut up too tight and snapping it
Nothing succeeds like a budgie with nae teeth

Well if he snaps the damper rod by doing it up too tight, I ain't telling him he's done it wrong....

If you over tighten the top nut you'll crush the bearing

nut 17 on the diagram which holds the insert in tighten to 200Nm
nut 21 on the diagram which is above the strut bearing tighten to 55Nm
nut 25 on the diagram which is the last nut tighten 55Nm
....

Neil I think you'll find that 21 is the bearing itself and 24 is the nut

Thank you all !!!

two more questions.. can I get at the 55mmm nut holding the inset without dismantling the strut?
When is it going to stop raining long enough for me to do it or should I buy an aqualung and dry suit?

Nope access is very limited.

As for the rain I'd go out and buy the diving gear.
