Changing brake pads - hacked off

by Robs-se » Sat Feb 07, 2009 8:37 pm

Went to change my front pads today, what an ar*e of a job its turning out to be!!
I have Billet 4 calipres and normally only takes about 15-20 mins on my other cars.
Not this fecker the pins holding the pads in have seized into the holes in the calipre.
and they are the split pin not the solid pin like on my old SE standard. Cant hammer
them out. Looks like i will have to drill them out.

Not happy as the MOT retest is on Monday and my hands are in shreds, lost about
8 pints of blood. wondered why the tools were sticky. So bloody cold i didn't feel a thing.

no the pins are the split pin variety, the ones you bend once the pin is in place, one bit longer than the other so you can get the pliers at it

I was going to say the same thing, tapered? But they are split pin, never came across those yet (fingers crossed).
Usually I just get a hammer and screwdriver at it, but if they are the other style pins then I'd say drill them out or you'll be there forever, have you had any luck?

Cheers for the offer Vinny, just logged on and seen your post. spent all afternoon sitting on the drive hammering the pins out. 2 afternoons for 2 pins i can't beleive it!! They are out now and i have lost blood on this one. Just need to clean up the calipre back to its gold finish and then use the standard pins i found instead of split pins which are solid.
At least the standard ones are hollow.
Just have the other side to do and then i'm finished for now. If i wasn't on nights and it wasn't snowing during the week i could have had it done by now.
Funny thing is there are no pad retaining springs on this set up

Now have both sides done, and even my wheel wobble has gone!! think there must have been something causing the disk to not sit flush to the hub somehow
