288 or 284 Any way of visully telling?

by Fenix » Sat Feb 28, 2009 5:10 pm

I've got a late 95 V6 calibra and need to buy new discs and pads.

From what i understand they should be 288's on the front but can't be 100% sure. Is there any way of telling which i have without measuring which could be inaccurate? Part numbers on calipers? Caliper shape? Pad shape?

Thanks
Fenix

No real way of telling without measuring, mines a 97 R REG and that has 288mm disks.

Pretty sure a 95 will be 284mm
You can measure the disc without removing it
Simply measure from the edge of the disc to the centre part of it X2 then add the diameter of the centre.

Andy is right the 95 v6 calis have 284mm caliper and discs while 97 and 98 calis have 288 mm set up,

Just seen a few places saying the switch happened late 95. Will measure if i have to but 4 mm difference is gonna require very accurate measruing which will mean taking the disc off.

i maybe better off measuring the rears as theres a greater difference. Just to confirm. 286 on rear means 288 on front and 270 rears means 284 front?

tbh given price of 284 pads over 288's i'd prefer them to be 284's lol

now i'm really confused.

Most brake sites i've been on say 09/95-98 v6 is 288 front 286 rear lol and 90-08/95 is 284 front and 270 or 260 rear.

Think i've noe choice to pull the discs off lol. Unless theres a difference in pad shape?

I appreciate that i can do that. But i also appreciate that measuring the diameter of a circle with a difference of 4mm can give the wrong result if i'm even slightly off with disecting the circle in half.

Found a way though which may come in useful for others too.

The brake pad shape is different.

288 pads have this shape.

284's have this one

I'll post back what mine has on it later on got some wishbones and anti roll bar links to change so will check while i'm doing that.
