does anyone know how to tell the difference between the two types of ZF rack with out removing mine.. if I get a second hand one is it worth getting the coloum with it and changing both ??

Yes you can, I've had the same trouble, there were 3 types of rack fitted to Calibras. No need to change the steering column.
ZF flat pinion (solid pipes are bolted down with hex/torx socket bolts, ribbed rack body)
ZF splined pinion (solid pipes are bolted down with hex/torx socket bolts, smooth rack body)
Saginaw flat pinion (solid pipes are bolted down with compression unions like brake lines, smooth rack body)
