Newbie rolling resto.
Re: Newbie rolling resto.
Well had some time and the back end is now lowered, was interesting to see what the previous owners thought was good to use as shock bushes, glad I sorted it, a random piece of rubber wouldn't have lasted long.
Fronts are going to take some time, steering rod is not releasing and the lower arm ball joint doesn't want to pop either, new ones on order. Gonna be fun, just need to take my time then I get to drive her for a bit.

So started on the front today, drivers side shock spring and lower ball joint.
Bloody pig, all nuts cut off to remove, several cutting blades snapped and fired at me, then when it was time to get the shock out the gland nut is bigger than I have felt with before. Bloody good job my dad was on hand to help and fix
When I finally got to rebuild it was going lovely whilst using a vinegar wash to kill rust and repaint, and then the steering arm ball joint won't stop bloody spinning and there is no way to hold it, might have to drill a hole to hold it.
On a positive note car looks good from the right hand side now

Looking good, I know the struggle with them only too well - spinning joint too. I used some long nose nips iirc to pin it in place while I nipped it up. Not easy at all...pigthief wrote:So started on the front today, drivers side shock spring and lower ball joint.

Re: Newbie rolling resto.
My brother in law stood on my steering arm ball joints while I tightened the nuts. Same problem with wishbone but I just put a Jack under the wishbone to put some pressure on them. Seemed to do the trick.

Now that’s smart given the height of the Calibra. Be interested to see pics of it fitted and how robust you think it is

Will let you all know, it's 2mm thick and has an access for oil change so can remain fitted

Re: Newbie rolling resto.
Finally finished with lowering, all new shocks and springs, shock rebuild kits and had to replace the passenger inner tie rod and end as it had seized on
But it was worth the effort I think, as I managed to get in and rust protect a recent weld repair so happy.
